Pinterest Project Tuesdays – State Nail and String Art

Okay… I am a little late, Sorry!! However, I love the project that I did this week!! I kept seeing this on Pinterest and then started seeing it on Etsy. I just knew I could make one and I did!! I love how it turned out and I can’t wait to make one of Michigan next!

Here is the pin that inspired me for this weeks project.

The pin takes you to a blog called The Harpster Home, which is a cute blog about their family and has a ton of DIY projects! You should check it out!

Now back to the project! I changed the project up a bit. I didn’t want to paint my board for 2 reasons 1) I didn’t want to wait for it to dry and 2) because I wanted it to have a textured look. So instead of painting the board, I used burlap! I loved the way it turned out!

So here is what I did!

Items you will need: (Cost $15-$20 and takes about 2-3 hours)

  • Burlap
  • Wood board (mine is 11×11 from Micheal’s)
  • Nails (Small length)
  • Tape
  • Staple gun
  • Scissors
  • State shape
  • Pliers
  • String

The first thing you want to do is cover your board with burlap. I used a lighter color burlap, but they make a ton of colors to choose from! Using your staple gun, staple the burlap to the back making sure you pull and wrap it around tightly. Cut off any excess burlap.

Next cut out your state of choice and cut a heart around the city you live in or choosing; in my case it was Houston.

Tape down your state to the board, putting the tape on the back. If you choose to paint your board you are going to want to use painters tape for this step so that you don’t accidentally take up any paint.

Then you start nailing around the map. You can use the pliers to hold the nail in place and then start hammering away! This is the longest part but easy to do while watching TV, in my case The Voice. Don’t you just love Adam Levine?? So cute!

Anyways! Once you are done nailing all the way around your map, you can remove the actual map from the board. Leaving you the outline of the state in nails!

From there you are going to start stringing from nail to nail. Tie a knot at on nail and then start stringing from that nail to the heart and back. You are going to use the heart nails more than once and that’s okay!

Once you done stringing, tie the string to the same nail you started with. AND your done!

Isn’t that super cute?? I like that is not perfect and I think it turned out rustic!

I hope you give it a try! Let me know how it turns out!

Until next time!

  1. Super cute! I also love the burlap idea more than painting.
I’m envisioning a cool fabric too since I have so many scraps left
from attempted sewing projects! Might give this one a try
